What is happening on the campaign trail today?

Kamala Harris will deliver a closing speech in Washington DC while Donald Trump is set to speak with reporters and hold a Pennsylvania rally

Kamala Harris has chosen to deliver her major campaign closing speech tonight in Washington DC at the Ellipse – the site where Donald Trump rallied supporters on Jan 6 2021.
Following his 2020 defeat to Joe Biden, Trump gave a speech at the park near the White House encouraging supporters to march on the Capitol, where they rioted to try to overturn the election result.
The decision to return to the site of Trump’s speech has been viewed as a symbolic gesture by the Harris campaign, designed to highlight her closing message that the former president represents a threat to Democracy.
Ms Harris has said she will use her speech to point out that “there’s a big difference between he and I”.
Trump is addressing reporters at Mar-A-Lago on Tuesday before hosting an evening rally in Pennsylvania, which, with 19 electoral college votes up for grab, is viewed as the most important of the seven battleground states.
The former president’s decision to hold the event in Allentown – where more than half of the population is Hispanic – comes after Tony Hinchcliffe, a comedian who opened a Trump campaign event on Sunday, referred to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage”, sparking outrage among the Latino community.
The Trump campaign has since sought to distance itself from the comments, saying they were in “poor taste”, but the former president himself has not yet commented on the controversy.
JD Vance, Trump’s running mate, is on the campaign trail in Michigan, where he is holding a rally in Saginaw Township. The Republican vice presidential candidate is expected to hammer home his party’s message on the economy, focusing on inflation and grocery prices.
Meanwhile, the Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz is in Georgia, where he will deliver remarks at rallies in Savannah and Columbus.
The Democrats also have Dough Emhoff, the second gentleman, hosting a rally at the University of Nevada and Michelle Obama, the former first lady, headlining a rally in Atlanta. Mr Biden, too, is taking part in a campaign call.
