3 dead, many trapped as under-construction building collapses in Bengaluru

Three people were killed after an under-construction building collapsed in Bengaluru amid heavy rain in the city. Twelve workers are feared trapped under the rubble and two people have been rescued. The incident took place in the Hennur area of the city, officials said.
Two rescue vans from the fire and emergency departments were pressed into rescue operations. “Rescue operation is being carried out in a coordinated effort with help from other agencies,” a senior police officer said.
Sources from the Fire and Emergency Services confirmed they recovered three bodies. Rescue operations are still underway.
According to Ahmed, who had a contract for tile work at the site, there were 20 labourers, including tile workers, concrete workers and plumbers, in the building when it collapsed.
Ahmed alleged that the basement was weak, which may have contributed to the collapse.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister DK Sivakumar reacted to the incident and said that a total of 21 labourers were present inside the building during the time of the incident.
“As per the information I got, 21 labourers were here. A 26-year-old Arman’s body was recovered. In a day, 26 people work here”, he was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
CCTV footage captures the moment the seven-storey building collapses. However, sources indicated that the building only had permission for four floors, but construction violations took place.
Bengaluru has been witnessing continuos rain, with several parts of the city, especially North Bengaluru, seeing waterlogging, potholes and traffic.
According to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, Yelahanka received 157 mm (six inches) rain in just six hours from Tuesday midnight to Tuesday 6 am.
